Bret Ladine Appointed Director of FI$Cal

Gov. Gavin Newsom has appointed Bret Ladine, of Sacramento, as Director of the Financial Information System for California (FI$Cal), according to a press release. Ladine replaces Jennifer Maguire.

He previously served as General Counsel at the California State Transportation Agency since 2022. Before that, he was General Counsel at the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation from 2020 to 2022, following his tenure as Assistant General Counsel from 2016 to 2020. Earlier in his career, Ladine worked in private practice. He also served as Communications Director for Congressman Dennis Cardoza from 2003 to 2005.

Ladine will oversee FI$Cal’s mission to operate the statewide financial system, which enables California to perform budgeting, procurement, cash management, and accounting functions. As director, he leads a team that includes Chief Deputy Director Subbarao Mupparaju and Deputy Director for the Information Technology Division Kanuri Murty.

This position requires confirmation by the state Senate.
