In case you missed it from last year’s Forum on Emerging Technologies on December 7, 2023, a panel of current and former California state officials discussed the transformative role of technology in government operations. The panel featured Government Operations Secretary Amy Tong, California’s first Government Operations Secretary Marybel Batjer, former gubernatorial advisor Mike Wilkening and DMV Director Steve Gordon.  The session was moderated by Keely Bosler, former director of the California Department of Finance.

The discussion examined how technological advancements are reshaping the delivery of government services, from public health programs implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic to systems for identifying and supporting vulnerable populations. Panelists talked about the need for innovative solutions and the importance of collaboration between government and the tech industry to address challenges posed by the rapid pace of innovation.

The panel also explored the evolution of the government-technology relationship, underscoring its critical role in driving better outcomes for Californians. Looking forward, speakers called for strengthened partnerships and adaptive strategies to meet the growing demands of a digital-first public sector.
