Fi$Cal CIO Sees All-Cloud Future for Department

By Published On: November 5, 2020

During TechCA’s CIO Check-in held via webinar on Oct. 29, 2020, Fi$Cal CIO Subbarao Mupparaju spoke at length regarding the department’s use of cloud services and their future with the cloud.

Among other initiatives and priorities such as education, analytics, and transparency, Mupparaju touched on some of the 23 cloud services currently being used by Fi$Cal.

Fi$Cal employs some garden variety cloud services like Microsoft Office 365, Zoom, and DocuSign, but they also build their own custom statewide vendor portal called Cal eProcure within the CalCloud infrastructure.

Although it won’t happen overnight, partially because their primary system, PeopleSoft software, is still on-premises, the goal moving forward is to eliminate all on-premises software and transition exclusively to cloud services.

“Someday in the future we have the goal of having zero on-premises society,” Mupparaju said.  “I think I can safely say we are one of the few departments that have embraced the cloud services early, and we continue to use the cloud-first strategy when we need to deliver a new service or a new capability.”
