The Little Hoover Commission will hold a public hearing focused on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to address food insecurity on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at 10 a.m. The hearing will occur near the State Capitol in Sacramento and be accessible online. The hearing is the second in a series exploring artificial intelligence in government that began last month.

The hearing will feature a range of expert speakers from academia, government, and the private sector, including:

• Nolan Sullivan, Agency Director, Yolo County Health and Human Services
• Dr. Ilias Tagkopoulos, Professor of Computer Science at UC Davis and Director of the Artificial Intelligence Institute for Next Generation Food Systems (AIFS)
• Rikin Gandhi, CEO and Co-Founder of Digital Green
• Dr. Hilary Seligman, Professor of Medicine and of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, UC San Francisco
• Adam Dondro, Director of the Office of Technology and Solutions Integration and Agency CIO for California Health and Human Services
• Julia Erdkamp, Executive Director of the California Statewide Automated Welfare System (CalSAWS)
• Lila Tretikov, Partner and Head of AI Strategy, NEA

The Commission held its first session on May 23rd in Silicon Valley. It featured Amy Tong, Secretary of the California Government Operations Agency, who discussed Governor Gavin Newsom’s executive order on AI, among other speakers from academia and industry.
